Police say Earnest Dewayne “Wavey” Harris was using someone else’s credit card to make purchases at several Athens businesses and off the Internet, so they searched his Athens home to see what he might have bought illegally.

Arrested and jailed late Thursday, Harris, 38, of 1013 Bristol St., Athens, was in the Limestone County Jail Friday charged with four counts of fraudulent use of a credit card and first-degree possession of marijuana, according to Athens Police Capt. Marty Bruce.

“He had been using the credit card, and we know it wasn’t his,” said Bruce. “We’ve been working with the Limestone County Sheriff’s Department on this and there could be additional charges coming. The investigation is continuing.”

In addition to finding evidence that Harris had allegedly purchased parts from Dan Wachtel Ford and merchandise from Beasley Produce, both of Athens, and furniture from a Huntsville store, police also found drugs inside the home.

“We found an indoor growing cabinet in the house that indicates to us that he was about ready to start growing some marijuana,” said Bruce. “Limestone County Investigator Brad Curnutt also found a quarter-pound of marijuana in a closet inside his home.”

Bruce said investigators are waiting on a report from Huntsville Police about the furniture Harris allegedly bought with the card there.

“There could be receiving stolen property charges coming against him on that, and it’s possible we’ll have more drug charges and identity theft charges against him,” said Bruce.
