Kayaker search

Search crews work Thursday to find an Athens man who disappeared Wednesday night while kayaking the Elk River.

UPDATED: The body of a missing kayaker has been recovered. The News Courier will have more information as it becomes available.

The search continues today for a kayaker who disappeared Wednesday while kayaking on the Elk River near Sportsman's Park.

Michael Rynders, 39, of Athens, was reportedly not wearing a life jacket when his kayak overturned. He was reported missing at about 8 p.m.

A number of agencies continued the recovery mission Friday morning, including the Athens-Limestone Rescue Squad, Limestone County Sheriff's Office, Alabama Marine Police, Rogersville and Killen volunteer fire departments, North Alabama Search Dog Association, Owens and Pleasant Grove volunteer fire departments and SARTEC, a specialized sonar search and rescue group from Tennessee.
