The old oak tree hanging over East Washington Street is no more. It was cut down Thursday by the city.

“They cut it down because they said it was hollow,” said Athens attorney Jerry Barksdale who had objected to the tree’s removal. “It was hollow in places, but at the bottom it was solid as a rock.”

Workers from Wolf Tree working on behalf of the City of Athens trimmed the tree Wednesday, but city officials decided to cut it for safety reasons after finding hollow places in it.

The tree, believed to be more than 100 years old, was struck by lightning and damaged recently.
