Limestone County Sheriff’s investigators were using search dogs and a helicopter Monday night to hunt for a man who escaped from Lawrence County Jail.

At press time, officers were continuing the hunt for Billy Wayne Short, 35, in the Tanner area, said Limestone Sheriff Mike Blakely by cellular phone.

Local authorities were notified two or three weeks ago to be on the lookout for Short.

“We received information from Lawrence County about a possible escapee,” Blakely said at about 8:45 p.m. “One of my officers attempted to stop him as he was leaving Swan Creek Trailer Park. He fled on foot and we’re still looking for him.”

A dispatcher at Limestone County Detention Center said Short was reported missing from Lawrence County several weeks ago but she did not know the exact date.

A spokeswoman with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department said Short was charged with theft of property. She said she did not remember when he had escaped.
