A home at 13434 Grigsby Ferry Road was considered nearly a complete loss after a Wednesday night fire that witnesses said started in the garage area, according to firefighters.

Homeowners Stephen Davis and his wife, whose name was not available, were home at the time but made it out safely, said Owens Fire Chief Gary Lovell.

West Limestone Fire Chief Frankie Riggs said no one was injured in the fire, but an Owens firefighter was treated for a hand injury.

It took firefighters about 21/2 hours to control the blaze, partly due to the wind and partly because the fire was in an attic, making it difficult to access, Lovell said.

“It got in the attic and when the wind got with it, it picked it up,” he said.

The cause of the fire has not been determined, Lovell said.

One firefighter said a coffee roaster in the garage area might have caused the fire.

The home, which is insured, is nearly a complete loss, Lovell said.

“There is heavy fire damage upstairs and smoke and water damage throughout,” he said.

Owens and West Limestone firefighters were paged to the scene about 9:05 p.m. The garage was ablaze when they arrived and the wind quickly spread it. The nearest hydrant was more than a mile away, according to an emergency radio dispatch. About 9:30 p.m., Owens called Pleasant Grove Volunteer Fire Department for backup.
