Volunteer firefighters from two departments had difficulty battling a blaze Thursday morning at a home on New Bethel Road because the subdivision has no hydrants, a firefighter said.

No one was home when the house caught fire at about 4:15 a.m., said Harold King, vice president of Oak Grove-Thach Volunteer Fire Department. King said he did not know the owner’s name. Oak Grove was backup department to Elkmont VFD, which responded first to the scene.

King said Elkmont brought two pumper trucks that hold 500 gallons of water, while his department brought a 1,000-gallon truck to help get water to the fire.

Firefighters battled the blaze for about four hours. The cause of the fire is under investigation, King said.
