A New Market woman has been arrested after a blood test allegedly showed her newborn had been exposed to a drug, an official said.

Athens Police Lt. Trevor Harris said Thursday the mother of the infant, Rose Mary Sherrill, 35, of 154 Deer Trace Parkway, was arrested Wednesday on a warrant for chemical endangerment of a child. Harris said the woman delivered the infant, whose sex is not specified in the report, several months ago.

“The infant was found to have a controlled substance in its system,” Harris said.

He declined to reveal what kind of controlled substance was found.

The infant is staying with family, Harris said.

Sherrill was released from the Limestone County Jail after posting a $50,000 bail.
