One airlifted from scene of rollover

Neighbors Pam Griggs and Leeann Howard didn’t see the one-vehicle accident Friday on Alabama 99 at Lydia Corey Road before it ended but they heard something.

“I heard the skid …” said Howard, who lives on Alabama 99.

Griggs described it as an “awful racket.” She said six people were in the vehicle, four boys and two girls.

Driver Kimberly Diane Thornton, 17, of Athens, and passenger Cody Clark, 12, also of Athens, were injured when the Honda CRV, a small SUV, flipped over. Griggs said passengers escaped through windows.

According to the accident report filed by state troopers, Thornton was wearing a seat belt, Clark was not.

One occupant of the vehicle was airlifted by MedFlight to Huntsville Hospital shortly after the accident, which occurred at approximately 1 p.m. A second person was transported by ambulance to Athens-Limestone Hospital. Identities and conditions were unavailable at press time.

Owens Volunteer Fire Department, Limestone County Sheriff’s Department and Athens-Limestone E.M.S. Ambulance Service also responded to the scene.
