Athens Police had a busy Memorial Day weekend, issuing 423 citations at 11 checkpoint intersections, according to Police Chief Wayne Harper.

Beginning at 5:30 p.m. Friday, May 25 and continuing through 2 a.m. Sunday, police set up checkpoints at: Elm/Hine street; Forrest Street/Lindsay Lane; Pryor/Shaw roads; Washington/Hine streets; Alabama 127/Airport Road; U.S. 31/Strain Road; U.S. 72 East/Line Road; Clinton/Christine streets; Washington Street/Lucas Ferry Road, and U.S. 31/Sanderfer Road.

During that time, police issued the following charges:

• 1 unlawful possession of a controlled substance

• 8 driving under the influence of alcohol

• 217 no proof of insurance

• 101 no driver’s license

• 24 no seatbelt

• 20 speeding

• 14 driving with suspended license

• 10 improper equipment

• 9 tag violations

• 6 child-restraint violations

• 5 driving with revoked license

• 5 open containers

• 2 noise-ordinance violations

• 1 fleeing or attempting to elude (with 1 pending)

Both Athens Police and Limestone County Sheriff’s deputies began setting up the checkpoints several years ago on the most heavily traveled holidays of the year, at which times there is also increased drinking and driving.
