Athens police upgraded charges against a 24-year-old Huntsville man Friday charging him with first-degree robbery and criminal use of pepper spray, both felonies.

Neal Mathias Reisel, of 6203 Rime Village Dr., Huntsville, was in the Limestone County Jail Friday in lieu $35,000 bail bond.

Reisel was arrested late Thursday by Athens police accused of robbing A-1 Title Pawn on U.S. 72 and escaping on foot. Police chased him down and arrested him on South Houston Street a short time later.

During the robbery, police said the suspect pepper-sprayed the female attendant on duty at the pawn shop. She was treated at the scene and was not hospitalized.

Police said a man walked in the business at approximately 3:30 p.m. Thursday, pepper -sprayed the attendant and demanded money. He left the building on foot, but was spotted by police on U.S. 72 near the scene. More than a dozen policemen then joined in the chase and apprehended the suspect several blocks east of the business.

A-1 Title Pawn is located just west of Spry Funeral Home. Police have not said how much money the suspect took in the robbery.
