A man who disappeared on the Elk River while kayaking with his girlfriend has been identified.

WAFF-48 in Huntsville has identified the man as 39-year-old Michael Rynders of Athens. Several agencies have been searching for Rynders since he was reported missing at about 8 p.m. Wednesday night.

Rynders and his girlfriend were kayaking near Sportsman's Park.

A source with the Athens-Limestone Rescue Squad said the agency was being assisted this morning by the Limestone County Sheriff's Office and Killen and Rogersville police departments in the search for the man.

Limestone County Sheriff's Office deputy and spokesman Stephen Young said a boat with sonar capability was coming down from Tennessee to assist search teams, as well as cadaver dogs from Huntsville.

The News Courier will have more information as it becomes available.
