MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) State officials say the number of fire-related deaths in Alabama increased 43.5 percent in 2010.

The state fire marshal's office says that statewide, 122 people died as a result of fire last year, up from 85 fire deaths in 2009.

In 2008, Alabama hit a 10-year low with 73 fire related deaths.

Alabama Fire Marshal Ed Paulk says 2010's increase could have been caused by a harsh winter and several fires that claimed multiple lives, including a Hoover motel fire in January that killed four young women and a Birmingham apartment fire that killed a woman and her two children in September.
