BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — A 23-year-old man is in custody charged in the Sept. 5 shooting death of a landlord. Birmingham police said Robert Alexander was booked on a capital murder charge in the death of 31-year-old Jerry Marcum.

Police said Marcum confronted a group of males when he noticed copper was stolen from a rental home he was renovating. A short time later a gunman fired into Marcum’s vehicle, killing him.

A passenger escaped injury.

Alexander was also charged with attempted murder. He was placed in the Jefferson County Jail without bond.
