WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Opening statements will begin in the trial of two suspects accused in the 2007 rape and assault of a mother and her son in Florida.

Police say Nathan Walker, now 18, and Tommy Lee Poindexter, now 20, burst into the woman’s West Palm Beach apartment with up to eight other teenagers.

The mother says she was gang-raped and sodomized as her 12-year-old son was beaten. The mother and son also were allegedly forced to perform sex acts on each other.

Both Walker and Poindexter have pleaded not guilty. They are being tried together, but their cases will be decided by separate juries that were seated last week.

Opening statements in their trial begin Monday.

Another boy charged in the case will stand trial next month. A fourth has pleaded guilty.
