Athens Recreation Department made a wonderful addition to the community with its first Funfest on Saturday.

Families turned out at the Sportsplex for activities ranging from baseball throws, hair and makeup creations, a booth where kids could blast a teacher with water, a seed-spitting contest, a three-legged race, a skillet toss and wrench throw and a $2 outdoor movie.

The idea is great for families and for tourism.

“The whole community of Athens has been wonderful in supporting this event,” said Recreation Department Manager Chad Vining. “Many businesses have helped the Athens Recreation Department make this event happen by sponsoring game booths and making donations. Also, the Retried and Senior Volunteer Program has been great by providing countless volunteers.”

The only problem plaguing the event was the heat. Vining said he hopes to have another event next year but move it to a month when weather is cooler.

Still, hundreds came out for good old-fashioned family fun and we think it is one more thing that will add to the small-town charm of this community. It is one of the only activities in which wholesome competition and games are available for children and adults.

We support it and hope it continues.
