Taking advantage of Elkmont Red Devil mistakes, the Lexington Golden Bears escaped Boss Hill Stadium with a 22-14 region win Friday night.

The Red Devils drove to the 3-yard line and did not score, missed a snap in the end zone to give up their first lead, lost a fumble, missed a field goal and threw an interception.

To make matters worse, the Golden Bears limited the Red Devils to 34 rushing yards in the second half while accumulating 159 yards on the ground.

“We have a lot of respect for Elkmont,” Golden Bears coach Rickie Putnam said.

“They did a lot of things well. They really hurt us with their rocket sweep. We made some adjustments at halftime and did some things better defensively.”

Coach Chad McGehee admitted his team made too many mistakes.

“We just kept shooting our self in the foot,” McGehee said.

“They out manned us up front. They were more physical and they beat us.”

Jeremy Beaver s gave the Golden Bears the lead with 11:15 remaining in the second quarter. Beavers scored on a 25-yard run to give the visitors a 6-0 lead.

Elkmont tied the score when Chance Newby scored on a 4-yard run and John Schrimsher kicked the extra point with just under four minutes in the first half. The Red Devils led 7-6.

A missed snap in the end zone with 38 seconds remaining in the second quarter gave Lexington the lead, 8-6.

Ryan Toner scored twice for the Golden Bears before Elkmont scored again.

Toner scored on a 6-yard carry with 1:38 remaining in the third. Tyler Pigg kicked the extra point.

Toner’s next touchdown came with 10:39 left on a 4-yard run. Pigg’s point-after-kick ended their scoring.

Newby scored on a 29-yard run with 7:29 left and Schrimsher kicked the extra point to complete the scoring.

McGehee praised the play of Drew Stanford and Michael McMunn.

According to McMunn, “We have to come back to practice Monday as a complete team and work together.

We have to believe we can do it and we have to believe in each other.”

The Red Devils travel to West Limestone for a region matchup with the Wildcats Friday night.
