Latraius Mosley (1) and the Tanner Rattlers won the Class 2A, Area 15 title Monday. The Rattlers have claimed an area title every year since 2000.

The Tanner boys basketball team was in a familiar position Monday after the Class 2A, Area 15 title game.

The Rattlers defeated West Morgan 77-71 to claim another area championship — their ninth in a row.

Jordan Lee led the Rattlers with 33 points while Latraius Mosley scored 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Tanner (19-10).

Whitt said one of the keys to the game was Tanner’s success at the free-throw line. The Rattlers hit 84 percent of their free throws, converting 21-of-25 shots from the line.

The titles gave Tanner a home game for the sub-regional round of the playoffs, an advantage the Rattlers have not squandered.

Each of the last nine years, the Rattlers have won their sub-regional game to advance to the regional tournament at Wallace State.

In two of those seasons — 2003 and last year — Tanner won the regional tournament and played in the state semifinals.

Both trips to the state tournament ended with losses to R.C. Hatch in the semifinals. In the 2003 game Tanner lost 78-50 — the Rattlers’ most lopsided playoff loss since the area-title streak began. Last year R.C. Hatch beat the Rattlers by one point, 74-73, on its way to the 2A state title.

It was the second year in a row the Rattlers were eliminated by a one-point loss.

In 2006 Tanner lost to Pickens County 71-70 in the opening round of the regional tournament.

With the exception of the 2003 loss to R.C. Hatch and an 89-74 loss to Holy Family in 2002, all the Rattlers playoff losses have been close. All those games were decided by nine points or less.

In 2001 Tanner lost to Mars Hill 78-72 in the regional finals. The 2004 and 2005 seasons ended with losses in the first round of the regional tournament.

The Rattlers lost to Altamont 62-57 in 2004 and lost to Hale County 61-52 in 2005.

The Rattlers will try to continue their playoff success at 7 p.m. Friday when they host Brindlee Mountain in a sub-regional game.

The winner will advance to the regional tournament next week to play the winner of the Cherokee vs. Cold Springs sub-regional.
