The Tanner High School girls picked up a big win Friday night to advance to the finals of the Limestone County Tournament. Tanner got a big night from senior Hollye Keenum as the Lady Rattlers defeated Elkmont 59-50.

Results of the boys game between West Limestone and Elkmont were unavailable at press time. Game details will be included in the Sunday edition of The News Courier.

The girls game started with Elkmont having the hot hand. The Lady Red Devils raced to a 10-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. Tanner, however, took a 29-25 lead to the locker room behind the three-point shooting of Christen Stephens in the second period. The Lady Rattlers led by as many as 10 in the third quarter as they were able to beat the Elkmont full-court press.

“We felt all along that we might have a few turnovers but thought we could handle the press,” Tanner coach Larry Greene said. “We knew they would eventually go to it and we were able to get a few lay-ups.”

The third period ended with Tanner holding a seven-point advantage.

Elkmont made its run in the fourth quarter. Ashley Roberson hit two consecutive three-pointers and Bailee Robinson followed with another. Suddenly, the Lady Red Devils only trailed 47-45 with 3:10 remaining. The Lady Rattlers, however, outscored Elkmont 12-5 over the remaining three minutes. Free-throws by Keenum and Mikala Malone sealed the deal as the Lady Rattlers advanced to Saturday’s championship game.

“We split with them in the regular season,” Greene said. “They beat us just two weeks ago. But we were able to get this one. They’re a well-coached team. We’re happy to get the win.

Greene saw rebounding as the key to Tanner’s victory.

“The thing I’m most pleased with is that we out-rebounded them,” he said. “We had a good distribution of points, too. It was a team win. Everybody contributed.”

Keenum scored a game-high 21 points. Cecily Woods led the way in rebounding with 15 boards to go along with her 11 points. Stephens and Malone added 10 and nine points respectively.

Bailee Robinson was once again the leading scorer for the Lady Red Devils with 16 points. Ashley Roberson had 13 points and Jamie Lack scored 12 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for Elkmont.

Tanner will face East Limestone Saturday night in the finals of the tournament.

“East is a very good team,” Greene said. “I don’t know how much we have left in the tank but we’ll do the best we can and hopefully that will give us an opportunity to win the game.”
